to save or not to save...

i was having an interesting convo with some of my friends at the library yesterday. we were talking about a situation that they had to write about in phil (biomedical ethics). the situation was if u had a child who was premature and had 2 brain hemorrages and may need surgery for other defects (he/she MAY have brain damage in the future). what would u do? he/she is at the moment relying on machines to stay alive. would u do what u can (perform any surgeries needed) or let him/her go? tough decision eh?
if u let him/her live, he/she may suffer in the future. he/she may be a social outcast or be in constant pain and rely on medication. are u willing to let your child go through that. will u be able to withstand seeing your child in that state? on the contrary he/she may lead a perfectly normal life with no brain damage and no further indications of ill health.
if u let ur child go, u may feel that u have saved ur child from suffering a lifestyle full of trips to the hospitals and ur child not being able to lead a normal life like other children. u may also regret letting ur child go, becuase u'll always be wondering if medical breakthroughs will occur in the not too distant future and cure your child of any problems they may have. there will always be the idea of "what if" in ur mind.
so the question is, do u stand by ur child and give him/her a chance to live? or do u let him/her go to save him/her from living a possibly strenuous abnormal life?
thought this was something interesting to bring up, i'll fill u in on other interesting topics when they come up. :O)
